about

Banker to Ceramist,
Shukti Singh Roy
Life is all about making choices. The choices you make will determine the final picture on your canvas. So after 25 years of a growing banking career, I exercised the ‘reset’ button. My exploratory nature and love for art and what it can do, led me to deep dive into my interest in ceramics.
Numbers, targets, presentations, timelines, business cycles had its own excitement but, I wanted to see the patterns beyond the closed business boardrooms. Suddenly, the lump of clay with all its unknown properties, taking shape of an idea, the trial and errors with glazes and the awe of opening the kiln and the unpredictable wonder, the sigh of excitement, when it evolves into a beauty felt as enriching as the journey. I was also sure that I would be able to use this medium to communicate change, besides contributing to environment and social causes.
Thus began the creative journey ... the beginning - (Ori) of Orikiad.

My practise is purpose driven with every piece having a story to tell. I try and blend the elements of form, structure, and shapes, challenging myself, evolving the self doubt into free flowing creation, which is a unique blend of form and raw emtion, between control and spontaineity. I specifically like working on the flora and fauna (with a focus on bees and red list animals ), dying objects and old architecture, themes of daily life, heritage and concepts that matter.
With the start in Afsa Kolkata in November, 2018 at Birla Academy of Art and culture, there have been several exhibitions - Arts Acre, SPM Baroda, Mumbai Kala Ghoda, India Story 5th Edition, Dec 2019, exhibitions with Cerafest, SPM Bandra, SPM Bangalore, 2020- 2022, ICAF show in Kalakriti Gallery, March 2023, group shows in Harrington Art Centre ( 2020) and Tejas Art Gallery ( 2025 ) and India Art Fair.
